Nikiwe Mtema
Co-Founder & Executive Director

Nikiwe is a social impact professional, youth development, and mental health advocate who is passionate about creating spaces where young people can feel supported, heard, and empowered. Her work is driven by a strong belief that mental health is an important part of overall wellbeing and that young people need the right knowledge, support, and opportunities to thrive.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Health and Behaviour Change Communication. Over the years, she has worked on a range of social impact projects, including disaster recovery and resilience, menstrual health research, and youth-focused HIV prevention, treatment, and care programmes. Her experience spans project management, research, communication, community engagement, and people management.
Nikiwe’s passion for mental health is also shaped by her own lived experience. She is particularly passionate about breaking the silence around mental health, creating safe spaces, promoting kindness, and ensuring that young people know that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
Through Rugare, which she co-founded in 2023, Nikiwe is committed to helping create a society where young people can openly talk about their mental health, support one another, and have the knowledge, skills, and spaces they need to thrive.
